New perspectives on the late first lady emerge in projects showcasing Lady Bird Johnson’s voice

Texas college student Jade Emerson became captivated as she delved into the creation of a podcast centered on the life and experiences of Lady Bird Johnson.

Spending countless hours listening to the former first lady’s recollections, from her early years to her influential role in the White House, Emerson found herself deeply enamored with Johnson’s narrative.

“I fell in love very quickly,” expressed Emerson, who served as the host and producer of the University of Texas podcast “Lady Bird.” She further added, “She kept surprising me.”

Released earlier this year, the podcast is just one of numerous recent endeavors that have utilized Johnson’s own eloquent voice to provide a fresh perspective on the first lady, who passed away in 2007.

Additional projects include a documentary entitled “The Lady Bird Diaries,” set to premiere on Hulu, and an exhibit located in Austin at the presidential library dedicated to her husband, Lyndon B. Johnson, who passed away in 1973.

These various initiatives collectively serve to honor and shed new light on the legacy of Lady Bird Johnson.

Lady Bird Johnson, the wife of President Lyndon B. Johnson, embarked on the task of recording an audio diary in the wake of her husband assuming the presidency in the aftermath of the tragic assassination of President John F. Kennedy in 1963.

A decade after her passing, the library made her audio diary public, adding to the collection of recorded interviews she conducted following her husband’s presidency, as well as the home movies she narrated.

According to Lara Hall, the curator of the LBJ Presidential Library, Lady Bird Johnson’s contributions behind the scenes are only now beginning to be fully appreciated and recognized.

The exhibit “Lady Bird: Beyond the Wildflowers” at the library showcases the numerous ways in which Johnson left her mark, and due to its popularity, the library is considering incorporating parts of the exhibit into its permanent display.

In the creation of her podcast, Emerson, a recent journalism graduate from UT, heavily relied on the interviews Johnson conducted with the library staff over the decades following her husband’s departure from the White House in 1969.

It is truly remarkable to hear about the experiences of Mrs. Johnson during such a pivotal time in history. The fact that she took on the responsibility of running her husband’s congressional office while he was serving in World War II is a testament to her strength and capability.

It is evident that she was a trailblazer in her own right, taking the initiative to purchase and revitalize a radio station in Austin.

Her determination and leadership skills are truly inspiring, and it is no wonder that she continued to surprise those around her.

Mrs. Johnson’s contributions to both her husband’s career and her own endeavors are an important part of our nation’s history, and her story serves as a reminder of the significant role that women have played in shaping our society. It is a privilege to have the opportunity to learn about her life and accomplishments.

Dawn Porter’s latest documentary, drawing from Julia Sweig’s compelling biography “Lady Bird Johnson: Hiding in Plain Sight” and a podcast hosted by the author, offers an insightful and captivating exploration of Lady Bird Johnson’s influential role during her time in the White House.

The film delves into her multifaceted contributions, showcasing her pivotal involvement in advising her husband on strategic matters, critiquing his speeches, and her remarkable influence on various fronts.

Porter’s documentary also sheds light on Johnson’s unwavering commitment to environmental causes and her advocacy for women’s rights, portraying her as a formidable campaigner.

Notably, the film recounts Johnson’s impactful tour of the South aboard the “Lady Bird Special” preceding the 1964 election, a time marked by heightened racial tensions following the passage of the Civil Rights Act.

President Johnson entrusted his wife to navigate this challenging terrain, and Porter vividly captures the grace and effectiveness with which Lady Bird Johnson undertook this pivotal whistle-stop tour in the face of hostility.

The documentary poignantly emphasizes Lady Bird Johnson’s humility, as Porter underscores her significant contributions that often went unacknowledged.

As Porter aptly remarks, “She did all of these things and she didn’t ask for credit, but she deserves the credit.” This sentiment encapsulates the essence of Johnson’s selfless dedication to her causes and her country.

The film also offers a glimpse into the personal struggles and the quiet determination that defined Lady Bird Johnson’s character.

Through poignant anecdotes, such as the poignant recollection of her daughter Luci Baines Johnson, the documentary captures the private moments of introspection and perseverance that fueled Lady Bird Johnson’s tireless efforts.

The scene where Luci Baines Johnson recalls the frustration she felt as a 16-year-old, seeing the message hanging on her mother’s door, “I want to be alone,” provides a poignant insight into Lady Bird Johnson’s methodical approach to her work, as she meticulously compiled her thoughts from various sources, reflecting a deep commitment to preserving her memories and experiences.

In sum, Dawn Porter’s documentary promises to be a compelling and illuminating portrayal of a remarkable figure in American history.

By weaving together historical context, personal anecdotes, and insightful commentary, the film promises to offer a comprehensive and nuanced understanding of Lady Bird Johnson’s enduring legacy, making it an essential viewing experience for those interested in the intersection of politics, activism, and personal resilience.

Luci’s description of her mother as being “beyond, beyond and beyond” encapsulates the boundless nature of Lady Bird’s ambition and her insatiable thirst for learning.

This sentiment is further reinforced by the assertion that Lady Bird considered a day devoid of learning to be a day squandered, a philosophy that undoubtedly shaped her approach to life and her numerous endeavors.

It is evident that Lady Bird’s legacy is one defined by an unyielding commitment to education and an unquenchable desire to expand her understanding of the world around her.
